1954 Studebaker Champion Conestoga (2 door wagon) chopped street rod

If you want a rare outstanding hot rod that is like no other, than this is the car for you. This car draws attention everywhere it goes. The deep black paint with the bright polished wheels and chrome bumpers are the perfect combo. The clean lines and smooth look is a hit with everyone that sees the car. This car is driven on a regular basis, not a trailer queen. The amazing thing is that it runs and drives as good as it looks. At 60 MPH the engine runs at 2200 RPM. We have about 6,000 miles on the car total. Under the hood is an amazingly simple looking 350 Chevy with two 4-barrel carbs. There are no obvious wires or cables exposed in the engine compartment, which adds to the wow factor. To add to the mystique of this car, we backed the 350 Chevy with a 5-speed manual transmission and a 9”ford rear end. Four wheel disc brakes and power steering improve the drivability of this radical combination. The seams for the chopped top are leaded so there will be no future problems or shrinking. The door handles are shaved and power windows installed. Nearly all of the aluminum on the car is Billet Specialties. The car drives very well and is very comfortable. The body work is straight, the paint is great, and the performance and handling is outstanding. The 2 ½ inch exhaust system makes a real nice tone while driving, yet at an idle the people wonder what is under the hood. I’ve had a hard time deciding on a reserve for this car, but I am listing it to sell. Therefore the reserve for this is being set at what I have invested in parts alone. As you will read, there was no expense spared in the construction of this car.

This car was featured in Northern Rodder Magazine in August of 2003 and has been on different websites, including Hotrod Hotline and MSRA’s Back to the 50’s.

We feel that when building a car, we make it the way the factory should have made it to begin with, so it still has the original feel and look of a ’54 Studebaker, just enhanced a bit. The car is painted in PPG with base-clear. The all newly replaced floor pans are also painted underneath. It rolls on 17x7 Billet Specialties Hustler wheels which people love. They are wrapped in Goodyear Eagle LS 225.55.17 tires that are in near new condition. There is enough sidewall on the tires for a good ride and a good look. The headlight and taillight bezels are rechromed, as well as the bumpers. The grilles are the original ones that came on the car and have been polished, but have not been rechromed and are slightly pitted. The overall fit and finish is very good.

Engine & drive train:
The engine is a 1971 350 CID 4-bolt main. There are new LT-1 connecting rods fastened to a 10.25:1 hypereutectic pistons. The iron cylinder heads are World Products Sportsman S/R’s. All this is topped with an Edelbrock aluminum intake and two 500 CFM carbs. Ignition comes from a GM HEI distributor. Cooling is handled by polished Coolflex hoses and a Howe aluminum radiator. The accessory pulleys and brackets are by Billet Specialties. The transmission is a T-5 5 speed manual transmission in an aluminum case. This is all backed by a 9” Ford rear end with 4.10:1 gears with a limited slip differential.

Chassis & Mechanicals:
The frame for the Stude is basically stock short of the Fatman sub frame. The chassis is painted gray with urethane paint. There are new Heidts control arms and stock Mustang II spindles. It is upgraded with power steering and 11” brake rotors. As previously mentioned, there is a 9” Ford rear end with disc brakes. The wiring harness is a Painless wiring harness. The steering column is a GM tilt column with a Billet Specialties steering wheel. The brake and clutch assembly is a Kugel Komponents under dash assembly, therefore it is not in the engine compartment. The less you see the more interesting it is.

Body & Exterior:
There are several body modifications done to this car, none of which crossed the line to excessive, as you can tell by the pictures. Working from the front to the rear…Below the bumper, the chin pan opening is exaggerated and welded to the fenders as well as the grille frame. The inner fenders are custom made and smooth like the rest of the car. The vents in the fenders have been smoothed and filled. The firewall is smoothed and flat with no holes through it for the wiring brackets, etc. The cowl panel is remade to accommodate laying the windshield back. The top is chopped about 2 ½ inches. The front doors have had the vent windows removed and the window glass replaced with a one piece slightly tinted window. The doors have also had the handles shaved to enhance the smooth look of the car and the doors are opened with remotes. The rain gutters have also been removed and smoothed down the side of the car. The glass is all new including the very rare windshield. The “c” pillar has been removed and the channels for the sliding glass have been filled and the quarter glass is now one piece and urethaned in place.

Interior:
Working from the front to the back, we start with a completely custom made dash. A frenched Billet Specialties bezel with Auto Meter gauges. The car is insulated and carpeted. The front seats are from a 2000 Grand Prix and are a dark gray cloth. The backseat is the original which has been recovered in a similar fabric. The trim panels would probably be redone by the next owner to suit their taste and are currently done in gray felt. The headliner and small trim is not done.

This has been a very fun car for us to build and drive. It is a VERY rare car that we took great care in the modifications to positively enhance the great features of this car. We have struggled with the thought of selling this car but we have decided that it is what we need to do as we are trying to start a Street Rod Shop full time. This car is an eye catcher, not only at car shows with the car enthusiast, but also when out driving around town by the average person.
