rear glass for my 54

Postby maffeim » 2009 Nov 25 Wed 6:43 pm

I'm looking for a rear glass for the clam shell door . The problem is that my wagon has a 4" chop and i'm going to need to cut it down. Any suggestions?

Find an "old" guy whos' done the cutting in the past..!
Go to Jalopy Journal / the HAMB board, or a web site like that and try to find someone that has the skills.

Good luck.

Wow ....I had no idea that one could trim a tempered piece of glass. Laminate windshields and safety glass but I have never heard of cutting Herculite or tempered. Then again I live under a rock. Please tell me more if you find out.

As far as I know...the only way it can be "cut" is by grinding it away. L O T S of grinding...

Though this is old knowlege, there may be other ways since I found this way.

I have a very important suggestion. Do NOT attempt this without first finding a replacment piece of glass. Since I am pretty sure there are none to be found, other then used one. If your very, very, lucky that is. Check out the cost of a replacment if you can find one.
Don't want to tell you how much it cost me for the ONLY NEW one I found 5 years ago after searching for about a year. Damn near could have bought another station wagon lump. Ha!!!
You may want to think about laying the the top of the clamshell piece down toward the front of the vehicle.
Or, you may have a better chance of fitting a different roof to the wagon with it's own newer, REPLACABLE, rear window.
Have seen both of these done and both looked great.
Also be advised that the originals came in both green and gray tint. Again, if you can find one.
Best of luck and if you find a reasonably priced "new" source please let me know first. I want to buy them all. Ha!!!!
Roger....

OK, after re-reading your post DUH!!!!! Your only chance may be to fit a piece of Lexan or plastic into that hole.

Did it ever have a window in it after the chop?

Is the upper part chopped or laid back?

Remind self, Roger, be sure to read the post and understand it first before typing response.. Duh!!!! :?

Hey!
As an official "OLD GUY" I think I remember being able to tape the window off with duct tape and using a sand blaster..
If that doesn't work use a BFH on the rest of the windows and turn it into a enclosed Panel Truck. HA!!!!
I'm done. Need to take my nap before bedtime.

Roger...Good to see ya wake up from your slumbers.

The mastic and sandblast system I have iried and used but only on Laminated glass. Never tried it on a tempered part.

Might be worth trying on some easily accessible tempered part.

I'd be happy as a clam to find a good used rear window...

Good luck with your search.

I've also heard that they can be "ground".

I understand it would take for ever AND could still break if let get too hot...but I've heard of it being done.
