Need Shop Size Air Compressor Info.

Postby Half Fast One » 2010 Mar 12 Fri 2:41 am

Hi guys;

Need some advice about Air Compressors. I'm looking for something to handle Media Blasting, Painting, Air Tools, Plasma Cutter, in other words a large Air Compressor. I have single phase electric only out here in the country so three phase is definitely out. I figure I will only be able to afford a 80 gallon tank size with a 7.5 HP motor and a two stage pump. Something that will be able to stay running on a 50 amp circuit and have a 100% duty rate.

About the least expensive one I have found is from Harbor Freight, $1,399.00 minus a 20% discount which takes it down to about $1,120.00 plus tax. Plus 2 year warranty cost. Have found another cheap Company , Schulz Mfg. but nothing about them other then they just started popping' up on EBay..

Wondering if anyone here has any insight about what to get or info about either of these I've mentioned? Sure would help. Better yet anybody work where they make these things and can get a great deal for there favorite BROTHER. HA!!

Let me know ASAP since my little two tank 3 HP motor one is on it's last few runs.

Thanks guys, Roger....

The important thing to find out is cfm (cubic feet per minute) at what air pressure you will be running something. All compressors I have seen will list these figures. Sand blasters and HVLP paint guns use big amounts. Most tools list air requirements on them. Two stage are the best- capacity, cooler air (less water), and recovery. Bigger is better - we all acquire more tools. Hope this helps.

Something else-- it seems tools require more air than the manufacturer says. I don't think you will be sorry if you go way bigger than you think you need. It sounds like the compressor you describe will be good. cfm is more important than hp- but hp is a good indicator of how much air it will put out. You probably knew all this anyhow. Sorry for the ramble.
