YES! a 289 found!

Postby BRIZ » 2005 Jul 10 Sun 1:39 pm

currently my conestoga has a 1962 model 62V (V555685) 259ci with a borg 3 speed as discussed in another thread here. the rear end tag looks like a 41 over 10. so it's 4.10?

this weekend i found a stude engine with a ford automatic transmission attached for $125. it looks good and spins.

the engine is a 289 president 58H (P69523)
the transmission has a red FORD metal tag with these numbers:
P-700-J and 10-33637 and 0-700 6-B (the 6-B might be mis-read)
what transmission do i now posses?

hope to rebuild the 289 and inherit a dual 2 bbl manifold my good'ol paw has sit'n in his garage! :P

Hey Briz,

Cool....
Just in case you haven't seen it yet....The twin two barrel you have (your dad has!), has "very" small ports. Like the rest of the aftermarket Stude manifolods....it seems they were all designed with the small 232 engine size ports. These were smaller than the 259 / 289 head ports.

Still cool looken, just not a performance combination.

By the way....what brand is it? There were a couple of'em. A "Stu-V" design twin two barrel manifold (with carburetors) on E-bay just sold (Friday) for $999.00 !!!!!

I got the overdrive working again in mine. Boy what a difference.

Very cool....
While neither one is a power builder, either will look great. They are both unusual. The two...two barrel is different because they are sitting sideways instead of front to back. The three two you never see on Studes either. The problem with that one is...it's not a "manifold" as such. It's just a giant plenum box that hooks to the heads. They work better on high rpm stuff.

The three two is set up for Strombergs...just get a "few" model 97's, get three good ones to work and not leak....the other is for small Rochesters. the old 55/65 Chevy type 2 barrel carburetor

Try both setups and see what works the best. Without ever using either manifold....I'd guess the twin two might be better over all. (Though, neither will get great milage). It's an easy swap, swap'em every few months....

There's an Offy single 4 barrel manifold on e-bay right now. I don't need it...I've got two.

Way too cool!! wish I was building a v8. With the fuel prices like they are though, I'm liking my flattie 6 better every day!

Been thinkin of building a good old fashioned 283 chevy motor for my truck project. Gotta re-engine a 4runner first and sell it before I can spend anymore $$ on my Studes :(

There's also this 64 Electra (maybe a Wildcat) that just came up for sale all straight and in primer... :?

decisions...

Late, Jeff

P.s. Felon and olsen (and their posts) gotta go (send them off with my love  )
Happy Wagoneering!

any suggestions on where to find 30 or 40 over pistons for my 289 president 58H (P69523) rebuild?
any other vendors you would try beyond SASCO or Studebaker International?

thanks!

I've forgot his name....but the guy that is now selling Ted Harbits stuff. He shoud have forged or cast pistons for you. I understand Ross pistons here near L.A. has/can make forged pistons.
Go to Teds web site, I'm sure he's got the new guys name listed there.

Or wait till I get that far, we can order two sets of .090" over pistons. Actually not sure of the actual size untill I measure the wall thickness in the block I have. And maybe another block I may be picking up.
I do want to go big though, so beware!!

Hey Briz,

I'll be going to Ross pistons hopefully next week to design and hopefully order a set of 289, .060" (3.625") over, flat top, 1/16-1/16-3/16 ring package, forged pistons.

If you're interested....let me know.
