Save them for high-value companions, the ones you'll actually trade, keep, or use for serious farming. The last stretch to max age is usually where these items feel worth it. Before that, passive XP is often enough if your farm is built properly. A lot of long-time players also leave an AFK setup running with sprinklers, hunger support, and passive boosters so the pet keeps growing while they're off doing something else.
